“Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Ephesians 4:3

We are called by God to KEEP the unity in the body. God created unity in chapter 2 of Ephesians, we are called to keep His unity, His way. Many times, people try to keep their unity, their way. They just want peace with others and not to fight. They will turn a blind eye and compromise truth or conduct to achieve it. The Bible calls this a false peace or unity.

So how do we keep God’s unity, His way? The verse before this tells us, “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love.” These are all character qualities that produce unity with others. Lowliness is humility and the opposite of pride. Gentleness is giving preference to others and serving them, the opposite is imposing my way and will on others. Longsuffering is to be patient with difficult people not harsh and impatient. These are to be done in Love and is the way we keep God’s unity, God’s way.

How do I get these character qualities? They are a result of the first three chapters of Ephesians, spending intimate time with the Lord and understanding all He has done and who I am without Christ. When I am in His presence I am humbled, made to be gentle and patient with others as I realize He is all those to me. When I am not in His presence I focus on myself and become prideful, harsh, demanding and impatient.

Who have you been focusing on this week, yourself or God? It will show in your character. If you have been impatient, harsh, prideful and demanding you probably need to get with the Lord and spend some time focusing on Him. As you do, it will help create unity with God and others.
