Choosing to Worship

The wise men went to great lengths to worship Jesus. It was an intentional journey to give of themselves to Him: “…they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their gifts ..” Matt. 2:11 Paul and Silas chose to worship God in extremely dark times while imprisoned: “Around midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening.” Acts 16:25 Jesus even worshiped with His disciples just before His sorrowful time in the Garden of Gethsemane: “Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount of Olives.” Matt. 26:30

On the other hand, Pharaoh refused to allow the Israelites to worship the true God: “I commanded you, ‘Let my son go, so he can worship me.’ But… you have refused…” Ex.4:23 Satan is also like Pharaoh, trying to keep us from worshiping God and wanting us to worship him instead. Satan even tempted Jesus (unsuccessfully) to worship him in the desert: “I will give it all to you,” he said, “if you will kneel down and worship me.” Matt. 4:9

Choosing to worship God (to devote our lives to Him and serve Him) is not always easy, there are obstacles, opposition, and competition. But, He is always worthy of our worship, and since we were created to worship Him, nothing else can fill that void. As Jesus said to the woman at the well: “But the time is coming indeed it’s here now when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth.” John 4:23-24

The battle for our worship is real! May we choose to worship God alone, and encourage others to do so as well: ”speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.” Eph. 5:19 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.“ Col 3:16
