Go Jesus!

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.” Matthew 11:12

Every year at this time, you can feel the excitement in the air. This is the time of year to hear the hopes and expectations of football fans everywhere. Fans everywhere don their sports attire, paint their faces, put on wigs, and even decorate their vehicles and homes according to their respective teams. It is like an army full of intensity, making ready for the battle as prayers are lifted to the football gods; statistics are then given for why each group believes their team will carry the day as they also try and convince others. When the day comes, there are screams of disappointment and shouts of celebration while football fans go through agony and ecstasy depending on how their team is doing until the battle is finally over. I am amazed at all this dedication, energy and intense emotion over a sports game.

Perhaps the church can take a lesson from these football fans. What does it look like to declare our passion, intensity, and dedication to the One whom we are devoted? Football fans give us a clue. As a matter of fact, Jesus declared in Matthew 11:12 that those who have chosen to take part in advancing the kingdom of God need intense dedication as they give their whole energy to battle with the darkness in our world. A good interpretation of what Jesus said in this verse is, “The kingdom has come with holy power and glorious energy that has been pushing back the frontiers of darkness. The kingdom is making great strides; now is the time for courageous souls, forceful people, to take hold of it.”

We should be the most intense and passionate promoters of the One to whom we are devoted. We should put on all the spiritual attire that lets people know we are on team Jesus. May our excitement and the things we talk about convince others that Jesus has already won so that they then desire to be on the winning team.

And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.” Acts 4:31
