PASTORS PERSPECTIVE

Thankfulness and Peace

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

I am sure many of us have heard this verse before. It is a great promise that has been given to us, but I think often times we become frustrated when we are not experiencing the peace spoken of in this verse. We begin to wonder “why?” Are we doing something wrong? Did we misunderstand the verse? Anxiety sets in and begins to consume our attention. We think of all that is wrong in our lives, all the problems we have, all the things we feel we deserve, and our minds wander far from the truths and promises given to us from the Lord.

But, what about thankfulness? What about all the Lord has done for you? What about the life He has given to you? God has done so much for us, He has given us more than this world could ever give. He has died for us, He has given us a place in His family. He has given us an inheritance from His riches and eternal life with Him.

It is so easy to focus on the bad in our lives, but it can often be a challenge to see the good instead. I want to encourage you to practice an attitude of thanksgiving towards God. Thankfulness gets our eyes off of our circumstance and on to God. In Him is where we will find peace.
