Do You Want God to Blow Your Mind?
Then they told David, saying, “Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah, and they are robbing the threshing floors.” Therefore David inquired of the LORD, saying, “Shall I go and attack these Philistines?” And the LORD said to David, “Go and attack the Philistines, and save Keilah.” But David’s men said to him, “Look, we are afraid here in Judah. How much more than if we go to Keilah against the armies of the Philistines?” Then David inquired of the LORD once again. And the LORD answered him and said, “Arise, go down to Keilah. For I will deliver the Philistines into your hand.” 1 Samuel 23:1-4
Was it wrong for David’s men to be afraid? Was it wrong for David to go to the Lord a second time to ask His will for this battle? No. Why? Because they end up going. One of the worst things we can do in our relationship with the Lord is to become spiritually superstitious. To put more emphasis on religious acts and robot responses rather than know that the Lord knows your frame, the Lord knows your heart. David’s men are reacting to a very real risk that normally would seem unwise. David hears their concerns and takes them to heart, but he does not take them as the final word on the mission. He goes back and seeks God’s will with an open heart and mind to God’s plan. There is nothing wrong with that.
This call to travel even further north into Israel, closer to Saul and his troops, into an outnumbered conflict with the great Philistine army, was one that was not only a call to battle, but a call out of safety. I say this because many people don’t always understand that side of following the Lord. The side of being called out of comfort and safety and into something a bit more risky. This can be a very foreign concept to people who believe that our faith in God is solely to bring us into greater health, wealth, and comfort. Let me tell you that our God loves to call us out of our comfort zones in order to bring to places of greater faith and reliance upon Him. When we step out in faith like this, we put God in a place where He really can show us His power and provision in ways that will blow our minds. Have you taken any steps of faith lately that have put your life in a place to see God do great things?
